Any of these mishaps happened at your wedding or a wedding you have attended?! xx

So a friend of mine just went to a wedding and asked me an amazing question.  “What happens to the hem of the dress when the bride switches shoes for the reception?”

It seemed so simple, yet I never had the thought to figure it out.  Well, today, I have the answer! We all have seen many brides change up their shoes for the reception (most likely cute flip flops).  Usually that change goes from a four inch heel to almost nothing.  That is a huge difference in your hem.  I spoke with our seamstress and sadly the answer is not all that great.  You can always alter the length of your hem/train in the back by tying the bustle a little tighter, but that always depends on what kind of bustle you get.  Unfortunately there are only about three good solutions.

1. Do not purchase a gigantic heel to begin with.  No one can really tell how high or how low your heel is underneath your gown.  Plus, a smaller heel is more comfortable so you might even opt out of switching shoes later on.  If the heel is only about two inches high, the difference in hem length will not be that great.  When you do switch to flip flops, you will not be stepping on your gown as much as your hem will be more accurate.  Solution number one seems okay to me!

2.  Have the seemstress make your hem a little bit above the ground to begin with.  If you don’t mind the hem being higher, let her take it up an entire inch (or more if you chose).  During your ceremony, pictures and part of your reception your cute shoes will be peaking out the entire time, so that’s not too bad. Plus if you do switch up to a lower heel, the difference is lessened.  The only mini issue with this option is that it is very difficult to get the hem absolutely perfect when it is above the ground line.  Keep that in mind and treat your seamstress nicely (as you always should) while she creates magic!

3. And finally… something I didn’t even think of, but a bride today showed me.. get flip flops that are platformed.  Now I personally am not a fan of the look, but these looked sooo cute! They were platform white flip flops the whole way through (not just the heel) with fun beading on the straps and crystalized “Bride” on the sides.  Adorable! This definitely helped out our bride too because her gown definitely had many layers that needed the lift even later.

Depending on your personality and your needs, any of these solutions will work.  Thanks to my friend, I too now know the answer 😉

As a friend of mine said… “don’t make your ladies look like 80’s prom victims”.  I couldn’t agree or laugh more. Although you secretly might want them to look horrible while you shine, think again.  Horrible BM dresses=horrible pictures! Eek!

If I got a penny for everytime I got asked for BM dress advice, I would be… sort of rich, :).  After a bride has found her dream gown, they always ask, “what kind of BM dress do you think would match my gown?” It really depends on what

kind of style you are going for. Whenever I do hear brides discussing it I always chime in, so here is what I’ve got so far:

You don’t always have to go with a longer BM dress.  I know many brides are afraid that short dresses might not fall right on different heights, but most likely, you’ll have to hem the dresses regardless.  One of our recent bride’s is using Alfred Angelo for her BMs. They have great options for different colors and styles.  Remember you can’t please everyone; it’s virutally impossbile.  With Alfred Angelo, you can pick a certain color and have your girls pick the style, or vice versa.  It is a happy way to de-stress.  Besides their many locations and their online directories are awesome.  For the simple bride, check out the J.Crew line (a personal favorite).  Their online

directory is simple, helpful and accessable by BMs all over the country.  Even simple department stores have great ideas like Macys, Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus or Lord and Taylor.  They are great for ordering in bulk, and don’t forget to ask if there are any specials when a certain number is ordered.  We all know a little discount here and there won’t hurt 😉

Mark your calendars ladies! Bridal Insider and The Bustle will be hosting a workshop designed to help our brides-to-be prepare for their wedding day!

This workshop will help all of our brides determine what style of dress is perfect for them.  We will show all of you different styles ranging from ballgowns to mermaids and destinations.  Different silhouettes, necklines and materials might determine which dress is perfect for you.

We all know the day does not end with just the dress.  Here at The Bustle we will make sure to go over different veil lengths (the benefits of wearing a veil), tiaras, hand made silk flowers, and all of the amazing accessories that we get to play with! Our local designer Somsi Couture helps create amazing gowns exclusively for our shop, along with veils and one of a kind hair pieces.

When should you start shopping? ASAP! Most people do not realize how long it takes for gowns to come in and get made.  Our advice? Its better to order your gown a year ahead of time rather than only a few months (avoiding rush fees 🙂 ).

Ok, so we picked out your dress and accessories. You’re done right? Well, most (actually almost all) wedding gowns need a hem and a bustle.  Luckily here at The Bustle we offer this service for our brides as well.  During our workshop we will go over which alterations are necessary and which are optional.  The price of alterations can be a shocker if you don’t alter your clothes regularly, so we definitely plan on prepping you to the very last detail!

Have you asked your hair stylist if she does wedding hairstyles? Most say “I don’t DO weddings” as if its a bad thing. Well WE DO weddings.  At the workshop we will also talk to you about your hair and make up options for your wedding day.  Here at The Bustle in particular, our stylists are all certified and experienced.  They come here to the shop and we organize it all! For your wedding day they even travel out to your wedding location and can beautify your entire wedding party! We will be able to explain all of your options as those last few critical months before the big day creep up!

Time and date are August 30, 2011 at 6:00pm – 8:00pm right here at The Bustle. As there will be a limited number of attendees please contact The Bridal Insider for more information coming soon and registration.
